Felon in Possession of Firearm: Montana Man Pleads Guilty

Missoula, Montana resident Steven Shane McCann, 29, has pleaded guilty to Felon in Possession of a Firearm, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and/or a $250,000 fine.

The guilty plea, entered before Chief U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken on February 14, 2013, stems from a May 17, 2012 incident in which McCann, a previously convicted felon, was found in possession of a firearm.

The investigation into the incident was conducted by a joint effort of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the South Dakota Highway Patrol, and the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation.

Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura A. Shattuck is handling the prosecution of McCann’s case. A presentence investigation has been ordered, with a sentencing date set for May 20, 2013.

The defendant, McCann, was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending acceptance of this plea and sentencing.
