Rodney Lee Zahn, 60, formerly of Sheridan, Montana, admitted in federal court today to transporting a 16-year-old girl across state lines with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. The guilty plea, entered in Missoula federal court, seals a grim chapter in a case that sparked an Amber Alert and a multi-state manhunt. Zahn now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison, up to life behind bars, a $250,000 fine, and no less than five years of supervised release.
According to court documents filed by federal prosecutor Cyndee Peterson, Zahn insinuated himself into the life of a Sheridan family in July 2016, gaining their trust before secretly fleeing with the teenage girl on August 2. When the family realized she was missing, law enforcement activated an Amber Alert. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is requesting media refrain from disclosing the victim’s name or images, acknowledging prior public exposure during the alert but stressing the need for privacy moving forward.
Authorities tracked Zahn and the girl to Casper, Wyoming, where they were apprehended. During questioning, Zahn confessed to having sexual intercourse with the minor on two separate occasions and acknowledged her age. Forensic testing conducted by the FBI Laboratory confirmed biological evidence consistent with his admissions, sealing the case with scientific certainty.
As part of his plea agreement, Zahn agreed to forfeit the Ford pick-up truck and camper used to transport the victim across state lines—a vehicle that became both a prison and a fugitive’s hideout during the cross-country flight. The physical evidence mirrored the emotional toll: a machine of mobility turned into an instrument of exploitation.
U.S. District Court Magistrate Jeremiah C. Lynch presided over the change of plea hearing and scheduled sentencing for May 18, 2017, in Missoula. No deal was struck to reduce Zahn’s exposure—federal law mandates the harsh penalties he now faces, a reflection of the gravity assigned to crimes involving the sexual exploitation of minors.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, and the Casper Wyoming Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Cyndee Peterson prosecuted the case, underscoring federal resolve in pursuing predators who cross state lines to victimize children. The conviction sends a message: the interstate exploitation of minors will be met with relentless pursuit and maximum accountability.
