East St. Louis, IL – April 30, 1924 – The Sixth Infantry Band, a 28-member ensemble led by Bandmaster Lowis, is making a tour of southern Illinois to recruit for army units stationed at Jefferson Barracks. Their visit to East St. Louis, however, has been shrouded in delay and misfortune. A 24-hour setback in their schedule left the band arriving a day late, much to the disappointment of local residents eager to hear their lively tunes.
