Philadelphia woman Myra Reddy, 54, is behind bars after being charged with masterminding a sprawling $100,000 identity and retail theft scheme that ripped off Home Depot locations across Southeast Pennsylvania. Authorities say Reddy led a criminal operation using stolen identities and a method known as “box stuffing” to defraud stores in Delaware, Bucks, Montgomery, Chester, Lancaster, and Philadelphia counties from December 2016 until her arrest.
The scheme was simple but effective. Reddy and her crew would remove high-value items from their packaging and replace them with smaller, more expensive merchandise—like stuffing electronics, faucets, and LED signs into boxes meant for cheaper items. They’d then pay for the low-cost product at checkout, later return the swapped goods using stolen identities, and collect store credit. That credit was resold at a discount to others in the ring, turning a quick, illicit profit.
Investigators say Reddy used the stolen identities of at least 30 people—obtained through pilfered driver’s licenses, Social Security cards, and other documents—to process fraudulent returns. She even exploited tax-exempt numbers from charitable organizations to avoid paying sales tax on purchases tied to the scam. The operation left a trail of financial damage, with total losses exceeding $100,000.
The bust began with a routine traffic stop in Tredyffrin Township. Police discovered Reddy carrying a fake license, multiple IDs, and a foil-lined “booster bag” designed to block security tags. Inside her vehicle: empty purses, a new vanity, dozens of door handles, a box cutter, and two large boxes packed with stolen goods—electronics, thermostats, and faucets. Also found: receipts and gift card returns from Home Depot stores in Delaware County.
At least three individuals have confirmed their IDs were lost or stolen and never authorized for use by Reddy. With an extensive prior criminal record involving retail theft, Reddy is no stranger to law enforcement. She’s now facing charges including corrupt organizations, theft by unlawful taking, retail theft, and identity theft. Bail is set at $500,000 cash.
“This defendant stole innocent people’s identities and ran a criminal enterprise that caused significant loss to local businesses,” said Attorney General Josh Shapiro. The case, led by the Tredyffrin Township Police, Philadelphia Police Department, Home Depot Loss Prevention, and the AG’s Organized Crime Section, is ongoing. Reddy’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 12. She is being prosecuted by Chief Deputy Attorney General Erik Olsen.
