N.Y. AG Investigates Death After Police Encounter in Suffolk

New York – The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has initiated an urgent investigation into the tragic death of Bruce Boyd, who met his demise on April 4, 2025, following a confrontation with members of the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD).

On that fateful day, SCPD officers were dispatched to a wellness check at a Brentwood residence in response to a 911 call. Upon arrival, Mr. Boyd was reportedly wielding a knife in each hand. Despite being ordered to surrender the knives, he failed to comply. Tragically, an SCPD officer discharged his weapon, hitting Mr. Boyd. The injured man was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI is mandated to evaluate every reported incident involving potential police or peace officer-related deaths by action or inaction, regardless of on-duty/off-duty status and the deceased’s armed/unarmed, custody/incarceration status. If OSI determines that an officer may have been responsible for a death, they proceed with a thorough investigation.

These are preliminary facts, subject to change as the investigation unfolds.

The grim details of this incident have sparked public concern and calls for transparency in law enforcement procedures. The community awaits the findings of the OSI to understand the circumstances surrounding Mr. Boyd’s death.

As the investigation continues, it remains unclear how the encounter escalated to a fatal outcome. However, with the AG’s Office taking a proactive stance, many are hopeful that the truth will surface and justice will be served for Bruce Boyd.
