Antonio Eugene Boyd, aka Tony T, 37, of Nashville, Tennessee, is headed to federal prison for nine years after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm — a crime that nearly ended in tragedy when he opened fire on a vehicle carrying two adults and a young child.
The gunfire erupted on September 15, 2016, in the Cayce Homes Public Housing Development, where Boyd discharged a 9mm pistol at least seven times at the occupied vehicle. Though no bullets struck anyone, the area was swarming with school-aged children at the time, and a school bus was actively loading kids nearby — putting innocent lives directly in the line of fire.
According to court records, the weapon Boyd used had been stolen from a vehicle weeks prior and was traded to him in exchange for cocaine. Boyd, a documented felon with past state convictions for robbery, two drug felonies, and a prior federal firearms charge, should have never possessed a gun — a fact federal prosecutors hammered home during sentencing.
U.S. Attorney Don Cochran of the Middle District of Tennessee didn’t mince words: “The reckless actions of this defendant placed the lives of many school aged children in great peril,” Cochran said. “Armed felons have no place in our communities and we are aggressively increasing our efforts along with our law enforcement partners to remove those who pose such a grave danger to our law abiding citizens.”
The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sunny A.M. Koshy, who emphasized Boyd’s repeated disregard for public safety and his history of violent and drug-related offenses.
Boyd’s nine-year sentence reflects the severity of the crime and the federal government’s push to crack down on repeat offenders carrying firearms in high-risk areas. He now serves his time in federal prison, where he’ll remain until at least 2029.
