Naturopathic Fraudster Indicted for Cancer Patients Scam at Hoover Clinic

BIRMINGHAM – The grim halls of justice were today abuzz with the news that Isabel Kesari Gervais, 60, a woman posing as a naturopathic doctor, has been ordered held pending trial on charges of defrauding cancer patients at the Euro Med Klinic in Hoover. This revelation was announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Robert Posey and U.S. Postal Inspector Frank Dyer.

In February, a federal grand jury indicted Gervais, who goes by ‘Dr. Rose Starr’ in Birmingham and ‘Debrah Goodman’ elsewhere, on nine counts, including wire fraud affecting a financial institution, false statements, and aggravated identity theft. Her arrest in Arkansas followed the unsealing of the indictment.

According to charges, Gervais, under her alias, opened the Euro Med Klinic in 2015, promising medical services like DNA tests to patients, including those suffering from cancer. She concocted a web of lies about her credentials, licensure, and qualifications, bilking patients out of thousands of dollars.

But Gervais’s deceit didn’t stop there; she is also accused of misappropriating the identity of one patient to fraudulently charge their credit card and another individual’s identity to set up a post office box. The severity of her crimes is underscored by the maximum penalties: 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine for wire fraud, along with a two-year mandatory minimum sentence for aggravated identity theft.

The investigation into this shocking case was led by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Erica Barnes prosecuting. It’s a stark reminder that even in the medical field, not everyone is what they claim to be.

An indictment contains only charges, and Gervais is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
