Josiah Bodie, Knife Assault, New Mexico 2023

SHIPROCK, NM – A dispute outside a Shiprock grocery store exploded into a vicious knife attack last November, landing 23-year-old Josiah Bodie of Newcomb, NM, a 37-month federal prison sentence. Bodie, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, left his victim hospitalized with serious injuries after a brutal assault caught on surveillance video.

According to court documents, the attack unfolded on November 12, 2024, outside Basha’s grocery store. The footage shows Bodie approaching the victim with a knife as the man attempted to de-escalate the situation and walk away. Witnesses described a violent scene – Bodie allegedly threw the victim against a wall before repeatedly stabbing him. The victim required several days of hospitalization due to the severity of his injuries.

Bodie himself sustained injuries during the altercation, requiring medical attention. But that didn’t stop the federal justice system from delivering a harsh sentence. He pleaded guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury, a charge that carries significant weight in the federal system, where parole is nonexistent. This means Bodie will serve every single day of his 37-month sentence.

“This case underscores the seriousness with which federal authorities view violent crime, especially those committed with dangerous weapons,” stated Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison. “We will continue to work with our partners to ensure those who inflict harm on others are held accountable.” Acting Special Agent in Charge Philip Russell of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the bureau’s commitment to public safety in New Mexico.

The investigation was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, with crucial assistance from the Navajo Nation Police Department and the Navajo Nation Department of Criminal Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Caitlin L. Dillon prosecuted the case, building a solid case based on witness testimony and damning surveillance footage.

Upon his release from prison, Bodie will face another three years under the watchful eye of supervised release. While the victim’s condition remains undisclosed, the sentence sends a clear message: violent acts on Navajo Nation land – and anywhere within the federal jurisdiction – will be met with swift and uncompromising justice. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on its aftermath.
