Mark Patrick Eddy, Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, New Mexico 2013

A 45-year-old Navajo man has been sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison for assaulting his intimate partner.

Mark Patrick Eddy, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, was sentenced in Albuquerque on March 24 for his role in the assault, which occurred on June 21, 2013 at a residence located on the Navajo Indian Reservation.

Eddy pleaded guilty to a felony information charging him with assault resulting in serious bodily injury. In entering his guilty plea, Eddy admitted to assaulting his intimate partner by throwing her to the ground and kicking her in the head, causing a laceration that required medical attention.

The investigation into the assault was led by the Crownpoint office of the Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety. The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney David Adams, who worked in partnership with the Navajo Nation.

The sentencing was the result of a collaborative effort between the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Navajo Nation to increase the prosecution of violent crimes against Native women.

The case was brought pursuant to the Tribal Special Assistant U.S. Attorney (Tribal SAUSA) Pilot Project, which is sponsored by the Justice Department’s Office on Violence Against Women under a grant administered by the Pueblo of Laguna.

Eddy will serve his sentence followed by three years of supervised release. His arrest and sentencing serve as a reminder of the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
