GREEN BAY, WI – A comfortable life drilling teeth didn’t stop Eugene Darkow, 58, of Neenah, Wisconsin, from allegedly stiffing the IRS. Darkow pleaded guilty to two counts of willfully failing to pay his federal income taxes on March 6, 2015, in federal court in Green Bay, according to United States Attorney James L. Santelle for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.
The feds say Darkow, who operates a dental practice in Neenah, wasn’t shy about *reporting* income. Between 2008 and 2011, he filed returns showing over $1 million earned and over $275,000 owed in taxes. But paying those taxes? Apparently, not a priority. Darkow allegedly failed to remit more than $200,000 of that owed amount.
This wasn’t a one-time slip-up. Investigators with the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation dug deeper and uncovered a pattern of alleged tax avoidance stretching back over a decade. From 1998 to 2012, Darkow allegedly dodged approximately $450,000 in federal income taxes. A sweet smile doesn’t pay the bills, it seems.
Each count of willfully failing to pay federal income taxes carries a maximum possible penalty of up to one year in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. That’s a hefty price to pay for allegedly keeping cash from Uncle Sam. Assistant United States Attorney Matthew L. Jacobs is prosecuting the case.
Darkow is currently released on bond, but his freedom won’t last forever. He’s scheduled to be sentenced on June 1, 2015. Expect a courtroom full of IRS agents eager to see justice served. This case is a stark reminder that even those in seemingly respectable professions aren’t above the law.
The IRS Criminal Investigation unit did the legwork on this case, proving that tax evasion, no matter how cleverly concealed, will eventually come to light. Grimy Times will be in the courtroom when Darkow learns his fate. We’ll have a full report after the sentencing.
