Nelson Aldama Alarcon, Reentering U.S. after Deportation, Virginia 2023

Alexandria, Va. – In a case that highlights the failures of the nation’s immigration system, a Virginia man with a history of child molestation has pleaded guilty to reentering the United States after being deported.

Nelson Aldama Alarcon, 38, was driving without a license when he was stopped by law enforcement. His vehicle’s identification number came up in the system as having failed to register as a sex offender. This led to his arrest and the subsequent discovery of his illegal reentry into the country.

According to court documents, Alarcon pleaded guilty to sexual battery in February 2000 after he was accused of sexually assaulting his roommate’s four-year-old child. He was subsequently deported in 2004 at taxpayer expense.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, led by G. Zachary Terwilliger, has taken on the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Carina A. Cuellar and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Reid prosecuting the case.

U.S. District Judge Anthony J. Trenga accepted Alarcon’s plea, leaving little doubt about the severity of this case. The nation’s immigration system has long been criticized for its failures to keep track of deported felons and prevent them from reentering the country.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the need for comprehensive immigration reform and better tracking of deportees. By failing to keep track of those who have been deported, the nation’s immigration system leaves citizens vulnerable to predators like Nelson Aldama Alarcon.
