Sharik Mendes, 39, of New Bedford, is trading his gym keys for a prison cell after being sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for his role in a sprawling heroin distribution ring that stretched from Providence, R.I., deep into Bristol County, Mass.
Mendes, the owner and operator of the HEART gym in New Bedford, pleaded guilty in October 2016 to one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute heroin. He was sentenced yesterday in U.S. District Court in Boston by Judge Douglas Woodlock.
Court documents reveal Mendes was not just a middleman—he was a major conduit. Between 2015 and 2016, he sourced bulk quantities of heroin from two Rhode Island suppliers and funneled the drug to lower-level dealers across the New Bedford area. His operation moved between 600 and 700 grams of heroin—enough to fuel hundreds of deadly doses.
The HEART gym, meant to promote health and fitness, became a front for criminal enterprise as Mendes used his local presence and connections to mask his trafficking. Authorities say the duality of his public image made him harder to detect—but wiretaps and informant testimony eventually exposed the operation.
The takedown was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Boston Field Division, with support from the Fall River and New Bedford police departments. Acting U.S. Attorney William D. Weinreb announced the sentencing, crediting interagency collaboration for dismantling the network.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric S. Rosen, of Weinreb’s Narcotics and Money Laundering Unit, prosecuted the case. Mendes now begins his 30-month sentence, a stark reminder that even those who build businesses on discipline and strength can be brought down by the weight of their crimes.
