New Orleans Men Get Prison for Heroin Conspiracy
Three New Orleans residents were sentenced to prison for their roles in a conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute heroin and cocaine base.
Jerry Spencer, Jr., 29, Mitchell Lee, 28, and Terrance Timmons, 33, were sentenced to 72 months, 78 months, and 60 months in prison, respectively, followed by three years of supervised release. Another defendant, Troy Adam, 50, was sentenced to a three-year term of probation for his role in distributing a quantity of heroin.
The sentencing occurred on no specified date in U.S. District Court before U.S. District Judge Carl J. Barbier. The defendants pleaded guilty to various counts contained in the indictment, which charged them with distribution and possession with intent to distribute heroin and cocaine base on May 15, 2014.
A fourth defendant, Devin Timmons, is scheduled to be sentenced on October 2, 2014. The case was investigated by the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the New Orleans Police Department, and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Theodore Carter.
According to court documents, the defendants were involved in a drug trafficking operation in an area of New Orleans referred to as the “horseshoe” or the “shoe,” which includes McCoy Street, Across Street, and Darby Street, situated in the shape of a horseshoe off of Old Gentilly Road in eastern New Orleans.
The investigation, which lasted over a year, involved numerous controlled purchases of narcotics by federal and state law enforcement agencies. The defendants were arrested on charges of conspiring to violate the Federal Controlled Substances Act.
The case is a significant blow to the drug trafficking operation in the area, and highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking and related crimes in the New Orleans area.
