New Orleans Woman Charged with Tax Return Fibs

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA

Angela Shelton, age 57, of New Orleans, Louisiana, is in the hot seat after being charged with making false statements on an individual tax return, a move that could land her in federal prison for up to three years.

According to a one-count bill of information, Shelton willfully under-reported the gross receipts for her company, Big Easy Accommodations, LLC, by over $300,000.00 for the calendar year 2017 on her United States Individual Tax Return, Form 1040. This alleged deception could have far-reaching consequences for Shelton, who faces a maximum sentence of three years of imprisonment and/or a fine of $250,000 or the greater of twice the gross gain to the defendant or twice the gross loss to any person under Title 18, United States Code, Section 3571.

Upon release from prison, Shelton also faces a term of supervised release for up to one year. But the U.S. Attorney’s Office was quick to remind the public that the bill of information is merely a charge and that Shelton’s guilt must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office would also like to acknowledge the work of the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigations on this matter. The prosecution of this case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Maria Carboni.

The alleged tax return fibs are just the latest in a long string of financial crimes to rock the city of New Orleans. As the Grimy Times continues to dig deeper into this story, one thing is clear: Shelton’s alleged actions will not be taken lightly.

Shelton’s next court appearance is pending, and it remains to be seen whether she will take a plea deal or fight the charges in court. One thing is certain, however: her reputation is on the line, and the consequences of her alleged actions will be far-reaching.
