Sylvester Lipscombe, Commercial Robbery, Virginia 2015

Five fast-food joints, pharmacies, and storefronts bled cash in a three-month crime spree that terrorized Tidewater, Virginia — and now, Sylvester Lipscombe, 49, of Newport News, is paying with two decades behind bars. Lipscombe was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for orchestrating and executing a string of violent commercial robberies in Suffolk, Hampton, and Newport News between September and December 2015.

On Sept. 22, 2016, Lipscombe pleaded guilty to charges stemming from five brazen heists. First, the Burger King on Victory Boulevard in Suffolk, hit on Sept. 29, 2015. Weeks later, he stormed into a Krispy Kreme in Hampton, brandished a firearm, and emptied the register. The pattern continued: the Hampton Health Mart on Dec. 1, Checksmart on Dec. 4, and finally, Metro PCS in Newport News on Dec. 23 — all under the same violent script.

Over just 90 days, Lipscombe netted thousands in cash, leaving shaken employees and traumatized communities in his wake. Prosecutors detailed how he entered each business armed, demanded money, and fled before police could respond — a chillingly efficient operation that exposed gaps in regional security and law enforcement coordination.

U.S. District Judge Arenda Wright Allen handed down the 20-year sentence and tacked on an additional two years for violating the terms of his federal supervised release. Lipscombe was also ordered to pay $8,816.22 in restitution — a figure victims say doesn’t cover the emotional toll.

The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Amy E. Cross. The takedown was a joint push by the ATF’s Washington Field Division, Newport News Police, Hampton Police Division, and Suffolk Police. U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente called the sentence a warning: “Robbing businesses at gunpoint isn’t a victimless crime — it’s terror on the ground.”

Court documents, including Case No. 4:16-cr-40, are available through the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and PACER. The full press release is archived on the U.S. Attorney’s Office website, sealing Lipscombe’s crime spree into the annals of Tidewater’s violent crime history.
