NEWARK, N.J. – A brazen interstate jewelry theft ring landed a Brooklyn man in federal prison today. Tony Newton, 62, was sentenced to 48 months behind bars for hauling stolen bling across state lines, according to U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.
Newton pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Claire C. Cecchi to two counts of interstate transportation of stolen goods. The feds say Newton wasn’t just a mule; he was actively involved in the burglaries themselves. On June 1, 2022, and July 16, 2022, Newton transported the stolen haul from Middlesex and Union counties in New Jersey, dumping it in New York. He later confessed to hitting jewelry stores in Bay Shore, New York, and Milford, Connecticut, adding to a total retail loss of a staggering $804,227.
This wasn’t a smash-and-grab operation; it was a calculated, multi-state scheme. The investigation revealed a network of coordinated burglaries, demonstrating Newton’s willingness to travel and operate outside his home turf. Sources inside the FBI suggest Newton wasn’t working alone, but authorities are keeping tight-lipped about potential co-conspirators.
Judge Cecchi didn’t just hand down a prison sentence. Newton will also serve three years of supervised release after he’s sprung, and is on the hook for full restitution of the $804,227 in losses. The court also ordered forfeiture of $804,227, meaning the feds will seize any assets Newton has to cover the damage.
The bust was a joint effort, with the FBI Newark’s Transnational Organized Crime Task Force leading the charge, alongside the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, Edison Police, Elizabeth Police, and even departments from Suffolk County, New York, and Milford, Connecticut. Special Agent in Charge James E. Dennehy of the FBI Newark field office oversaw the operation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Farhana C. Melo, of the OCDETF/Narcotic Unit in Newark, prosecuted the case. With Newton locked up and facing a hefty bill, authorities hope this sends a message: crossing state lines with stolen goods isn’t worth the risk. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case for any further developments.
