Nicholas Moser, 25, was sentenced to four years and four months in prison for causing a fatal car accident while driving under the influence. The accident occurred on August 31, 2013, in Kings Canyon National Park, California.
According to court documents, Moser was driving a truck with several passengers when he lost control and rolled the vehicle near Cedar Grove. Three of Moser’s passengers were ejected, resulting in the death of Thomas Wefald and serious injuries to the other two. Another passenger in the cab was also injured, as was Moser.
The incident occurred after Moser and his passengers had consumed alcohol and smoked marijuana. They had driven to Muir Rock, located at the end of Highway 180, where they remained for about a half an hour before returning to Cedar Grove.
The case was investigated by the National Park Service and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael Frye. United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced the sentencing.
Moser’s sentence is a result of his guilty plea to involuntary manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol.
