A man from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced in federal court for stealing over $216,000 in Social Security benefits from a deceased recipient.
Nicholas T. Grimes, 31, was convicted of theft of government property in federal court, with United States District Judge J. Nicholas Ranjan imposing a sentence of 3 years’ probation and 7 days intermittent confinement.
According to information presented to the court, Grimes began stealing the Social Security retirement benefits in 2014. He negotiated the benefits from the deceased’s account through ATM transactions, ultimately stealing a total of $216,779.
Grimes has been ordered to pay the full restitution of $216,779 to the Social Security Administration. The Social Security Administration – Office of the Inspector General and the United States Postal Inspection Service investigated the case.
Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Melucci prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. First Assistant United States Attorney Troy Rivetti commended the agencies involved in the investigation.
Grimes’ sentence is a result of his conviction on one count of theft of government property. He will serve 3 years’ probation and must pay restitution to the Social Security Administration.
