PHILADELPHIA – A five-man crew faces decades in federal prison after a jury found them guilty of a terrifying wave of armed carjackings that culminated in murder and a botched attempt to silence a witness. The ring operated in and around Philadelphia, ripping cars from their owners and shipping the stolen vehicles overseas to Africa for resale.
The five – Mikal McCracken (24, aka “Kal”), Amin Muse (24, aka “Miyn” and “Miyns”), Aleem Abdul-Hakim (23, aka “Fatleem”), Dean Fosque (28, aka “30”), and Kavon Coleman (23, aka “Ski”) – were indicted last July. The evidence presented at trial painted a picture of cold-blooded greed and escalating violence.
McCracken and Muse were both convicted in the February 2022 murder of a former Marine during a carjacking. The pair, along with two others, brutally robbed and killed the veteran. But the violence didn’t stop there. McCracken and Muse were also found guilty of conspiring to murder a potential witness in the carjacking – a desperate attempt to cover their tracks.
The scope of their operation was staggering. McCracken alone was tied to 20 separate armed carjackings, five of which involved victims being shot or fired upon. One victim was targeted twice, carjacked and shot on two different occasions just a month apart. Muse was connected to eight additional carjackings, with one victim shot at. Abdul-Hakim participated in five carjackings, while Fosque was linked to nine, including three where someone was hit by gunfire. Coleman participated in four of the incidents.
Prosecutors didn’t detail the mechanics of the international auto smuggling operation, but suggested the profits incentivized the group’s brazen tactics. Sentencing dates have not been announced, but with convictions on these charges, all five men are looking at significant time behind bars.
