NORFOLK, VA – James Edward Sweat, 40, is looking at serious time after a federal jury slammed him with convictions on drug and gun charges yesterday. The bust went down December 18th at his Norfolk crib, where agents found enough firepower and poison to seriously mess up the city.
According to the feds, the search turned up two firearms – a shotgun and a handgun – along with six magazines, including a high-capacity 100-round drum. They also found enough to cook up dope with three drug-making kits, 14.3 grams of crack, and fentanyl already bagged for street sales. Nine different types of ammunition rounded out the haul.
Sweat wasn’t exactly a stranger to the system. He’s already done time for abduction, two counts of robbery, and packing heat during a felony. That prior rap sheet made the gun charges stick even harder. As a convicted felon, he wasn’t supposed to have *any* firearms or ammo.
He’s facing a mandatory minimum of five years, but could get life in prison when sentenced July 14th. The judge will take into account federal sentencing guidelines, but Sweat’s history isn’t going to work in his favor.
The ATF’s Washington Field Division led the investigation, with a helping hand from the Chesapeake and Norfolk Police Departments. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joseph E. DePadilla and Megan M. Montoya are handling the prosecution.
The feds are tying this case into “Operation Take Back America,” a broad effort aimed at tackling cartels and illegal immigration – a standard bit of political spin they like to attach to these things.
