NY AG James Leads Lawsuit Against Trump’s Research Funding Cuts

New York – In a landmark move to protect critical medical and public health research, New York Attorney General Letitia James has joined 16 of her fellow state attorneys general in filing an urgent lawsuit against the Trump administration. The coalition aims to preserve funding cuts that threaten life-saving research at institutions across the country.

The lawsuit targets the Trump administration’s attempt to slash funds for biomedical and public health research, which supports vital work conducted by institutions like CUNY and SUNY, including Stony Brook University and University at Buffalo. Attorney General James issued a stern warning: “The President cannot simply toss aside laws that protect this funding.

The joint statement from the attorneys general emphasized that these cuts are not just unlawful but also pose a direct threat to public health, economic stability, and global competitiveness. The funding is crucial for essential expenses such as lab costs, faculty salaries, infrastructure, and utilities, which in turn support lifesaving research into diseases like cancer, ALS, and heart disease.

“We are fighting for the rule of law,” James declared, “and for our loved ones, friends, and neighbors. We will not allow President Trump to play politics with our public health.” The coalition was heartened by the swift action taken by the court, which issued an emergency Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) hours after the lawsuit was filed.

The TRO prevents the NIH from implementing the funding cuts while the lawsuit proceeds. Attorney General James and her colleagues are now urging the court to maintain this protection against the administration’s reckless abuse of power.

Joining James in this fight are attorneys general from Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington. The coalition stands united in their commitment to preserving the integrity of medical research and the health of all Americans.
