New York – In a bold move against the federal government, New York Attorney General Letitia James has rallied a coalition of 25 states to challenge the Supreme Court’s consideration of a dangerous attempt to slash food assistance for millions. The AG is leading the charge to combat the administration’s bid to legally truncate Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
In an amicus brief, Attorney General James and her allies argue that the federal government’s request to stay an order from the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island is nothing but a thinly veiled attempt to rob more than 40 million Americans of their rightful SNAP benefits. The coalition asserts that full funding of November’s SNAP benefits is not just a legal obligation, but also a moral imperative.
‘This administration has shown time and again its willingness to go to any length to illegally cut off the assistance millions rely on to survive,’ Attorney General James declared. ‘I will continue to fight their heartless attempts to deny New Yorkers and Americans across the country the SNAP benefits they are entitled to. The Supreme Court must reject this cruel effort to sidestep its responsibilities.’
The dispute began when the Rhode Island District Court ordered full November SNAP funding, which USDA initially agreed to provide. However, after states started distributing the funds, the administration issued a memo reversing its stance and threatening financial penalties for states that continued to distribute full benefits.
Attorney General James and the coalition have been relentless in their legal battle against these arbitrary cuts. They’ve already secured court orders requiring USDA to use contingency funds for at least partial funding during the shutdown, fought off attempts to claw back SNAP benefits, and now they are appealing to the Supreme Court to block any further attempts at food assistance deprivation.
Joining Attorney General James in this fight are AGs from states including Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, and more, as well as governors from Kansas, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. The legal battle over SNAP benefits continues to heat up, with the fate of millions of Americans at stake.
