New York – The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has announced an official probe into the death of Bruce Boyd, who succumbed on April 4, 2025, following a confrontation with the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD).
On the afternoon of April 4, SCPD officers responded to a wellness check at a Brentwood residence. The situation escalated when Mr. Boyd reportedly approached the officers wielding two knives. Despite commands to drop the weapons, he did not comply. An officer fired his weapon, and Mr. Boyd was rushed to the hospital where he ultimately passed away.
Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI is legally required to assess every incident involving a police or peace officer potentially causing a civilian’s death. The law applies regardless of whether the officer was on-duty or off-duty and irrespective of the decedent’s status as armed or unarmed, in custody, or incarcerated.
As these are preliminary findings, OSI will proceed to conduct a thorough investigation if it deems an officer may have caused the death. The public is reminded that all findings remain subject to change.
This incident has sparked renewed scrutiny on police practices and procedures in Suffolk County.
