New York – In a bold move against discriminatory pricing, New York Attorney General Letitia James has issued a consumer alert, cautioning Jewish communities to be on high alert for potential price gouging at car washes in the days leading up to Passover.
James warns that businesses have historically exploited religious observances by raising prices for essential services such as car washing. This practice is illegal under New York law, which prohibits discrimination based on religion.
The Attorney General’s office has received reports of companies advertising ‘specials’ for Passover-related services but then charging Jewish customers more than the advertised rates. Such practices are not only offensive but also a violation of the law, James asserts.
‘Taking advantage of someone’s religious observances and practices is offensive and unacceptable,’ said Attorney General James. ‘I urge Jewish New Yorkers who feel they may have been targeted by discriminatory price gouging to contact my office immediately.’
James also reminds consumers to be vigilant for price spikes in essential Passover goods and services, including eggs, kosher meat, matzah, cleaning services, and travel accommodations. Any business or individual found guilty of these practices will face accountability.
The Attorney General’s office encourages anyone aware of discriminatory practices or experiencing unjustified price hikes to file a complaint online or call 1-800-771-7755. No New Yorker should be exploited during the holiday season.
