Trump Admin Sued Over Mass Federal Worker Firings

NEW YORK – Attorney General Letitia James and a coalition of 19 other attorneys general have filed suit against the Trump administration, alleging the illegal firing of thousands of probationary federal workers nationwide, including hundreds in New York. The administration bypassed federal law by conducting immediate mass terminations without providing the required advance notice to affected employees and states – a blatant disregard for the chaos it would unleash.

The lawsuit centers on the administration’s directive to federal agencies to execute these “Reductions in Force” (RIF) without adhering to the 60-day prior written notice requirement. This legal obligation exists to allow states time to mobilize resources, including job training programs and unemployment claim processing, mitigating the damage to workers and communities. Attorney General James argues this isn’t just a bureaucratic oversight; it’s a deliberate act of disruption.

“Whether it’s providing health care to our veterans, keeping our communities safe, or ensuring our children get a quality education, federal employees provide essential services every day,” stated Attorney General James. “The Trump administration’s illegal mass firings of federal workers are a slap in the face to those who have spent their careers serving our country. Thousands of workers across New York and the nation are now struggling to pay rent, put food on the table, and care for their loved ones. Today, I am joining my fellow attorneys general in defending the rights of workers who serve our communities and stopping the chaos and confusion this unjust policy is causing.”

The impact in New York is already being felt. In the last week of February, 372 federal workers filed for unemployment. Over 1,000 Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) employees were terminated nationwide in February, including staff at VA medical centers within New York. Seven staffers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) assigned to New York City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene were also axed. In Buffalo and Syracuse, over 100 Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employees were let go, crippling assistance to New Yorkers during peak tax season. Even the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) regional office in Buffalo suffered significant cuts, potentially jeopardizing worker rights across Western New York.

These targeted probationary employees are those newly hired or recently promoted or transferred, typically subject to a one or two-year trial period. The lawsuit argues that the Trump administration knowingly circumvented the law, prioritizing political maneuvering over the well-being of dedicated public servants. Congressman Dan Goldman weighed in, stating, “Federal employees are the backbone of our nation’s operations, and their work is absolutely vital to the safety and well-being of every American. The illegal mass firing of probationary employees is…” (statement incomplete in source material).

Attorney General James and the coalition are seeking a court order to halt further mass layoffs without proper notice and to reinstate all illegally terminated federal workers since January 20, 2025. This isn’t simply a legal battle; it’s a fight to protect the livelihoods of thousands and ensure the continued functioning of vital government services.
