New York – In a dire warning ahead of an impending major winter storm, New York Attorney General Letitia James has issued a consumer alert, cautioning against price gouging by businesses capitalizing on the emergency situation. Governor Hochul has declared a state of emergency across the state.
Under New York’s stringent price gouging laws, businesses are forbidden from exploiting consumers during market disruptions or emergencies by charging exorbitant prices for essential goods and services. The AG’s office is urging New Yorkers to report any instances of excessive pricing to the Office of the Attorney General (OAG).
‘This storm promises heavy snowfall and perilously low temperatures across our state,’ said Attorney General James. ‘New Yorkers should not have to pay inflated prices for essentials like food, water, or shelter during such emergencies. My office will leave no stone unturned in holding those who attempt to profit from this emergency accountable.’
The law extends to all vendors, retailers, and suppliers in New York, encompassing vital goods and services necessary for the public’s health, safety, and welfare, including food, water, gasoline, generators, batteries, flashlights, hotel lodging, and transportation.
Consumers witnessing price gouging are instructed to document specific increased prices, dates, and locations, along with providing copies of sales receipts and photos of advertised prices if possible. Violations of the law can result in penalties up to $25,000 per incident. New Yorkers should report price gouging by filing an online complaint or calling 800-771-7755.
