New York Attorney General Letitia James today released graphic body-worn camera footage from the investigation into the tragic death of Brian Czornyj, who was killed on June 5, 2025, during an encounter with the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department (TPPD).
The Office of Special Investigation (OSI) obtained the footage as part of its probe into the incident. The release of this footage is in line with AG James’ directive to increase transparency and public trust by releasing camera footage during OSI investigations.
On June 5, TPPD officers were responding to a report of an assault with a sword at a Poughkeepsie residence. Upon arrival, they encountered two men with one sword. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, the men refused. An officer discharged his service weapon, striking Mr. Czornyj, who was later pronounced dead in hospital. The other man was treated and released.
Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI is investigating every aspect of this incident, which includes police actions that may have caused the death. This investigation follows a legal framework that considers officers’ status (on-duty or off-duty) and whether the deceased was armed or in custody.
The release of this footage does not indicate any opinion on guilt or innocence in a criminal matter, nor does it suggest any charges against any individual. Viewers are warned that the video contains disturbing content.
