New York Attorney General Letitia James has thrown her weight behind a coalition of 20 other attorneys general in filing amicus briefs to support Jenner & Block LLP and WilmerHale LLP, law firms targeted by the Trump administration. These briefs argue that President Trump’s Executive Orders imposing sanctions for their work are unconstitutional.
James declared, “Targeting and sanctioning law firms for representing clients the president disagrees with is unconstitutional and undemocratic.” The orders in question affect security clearances, restrict interactions with federal employees, and threaten contracts with federal contractors.
The coalition asserts that the Executive Orders are an abuse of authority, crucial to a fair judiciary where lawyers can represent controversial cases without government retribution. They fear these orders will hinder access to legal services, particularly for pro bono clients.
This is not the first time James has defended the legal industry against Trump’s unconstitutional moves; last month she filed a brief in support of Perkins Coie LLP. The coalition supporting Jenner & Block and WilmerHale includes attorneys general from Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and the District of Columbia.
The legal community remains on high alert as this battle over Executive Orders continues to unfold in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
