SCRANTON – The grim halls of justice have once again been shaken as Charles J. Senke, a 59-year-old resident of Syracuse, New York, has been indicted for child exploitation crimes. According to a federal grand jury in the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Senke stands accused of traveling across state lines with the intent to engage in sexual conduct with a minor.
The indictment alleges that Senke used the dark underbelly of the internet and a mobile device to entice a person he believed to be 14 years old into illicit sexual behavior. His sinister plan culminated on February 4, 2015, when he set his sights on Scranton, driving from Syracuse with one goal in mind: to meet and sexually exploit the child.
The FBI and Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General worked tirelessly to unravel Senke’s web of deceit, leading to his arraignment. Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Olshefski is now at the helm of the prosecution.
This case is a stark reminder of Project Safe Childhood’s ongoing battle against child sexual exploitation. Launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice, this nationwide initiative has been instrumental in apprehending predators like Senke and protecting our youth from harm.
Senke now faces life imprisonment, supervised release, and potentially heavy fines if convicted. The severity of his offense cannot be overstated, as the federal sentencing guidelines take into account the heinous nature of the crime, as well as the defendant’s history and characteristics.
As we continue to fight for justice for innocent victims like the child in this case, let us remember that until proven guilty in court, all persons charged are presumed innocent. However, with charges as grave as these, Senke’s fate hangs in the balance.
