New York – The Office of the New York Attorney General (OAG) has issued a stern warning and legal action against three companies found selling skin-lightening products laced with dangerous levels of mercury. Aleena Cosmetics, Axabee Skincare, and Singhcart, LLC have been ordered to immediately cease sales, following an OAG investigation that revealed their products contained mercury concentrations up to 30,000 times the state’s legal limit.
Attorney General Letitia James emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “Mercury is poison, not a beauty treatment. No company should profit by endangering New Yorkers’ health.” The OAG investigation was prompted by public health advocates and community organizations, focusing on Malverne-based companies Aleena Cosmetics and Axabee Skincare, as well as Valley Stream’s Singhcart, LLC.
Under state law, only trace amounts of mercury are permitted in such products. However, laboratory tests confirmed illegal levels in all purchased products from the three companies. Consumers are warned about the risks associated with mercury exposure, including neurological damage, kidney and liver harm, and serious risks to fetal development.
The OAG has issued cease-and-desist letters, requiring compliance within five business days. Non-compliance may result in legal action and civil penalties of up to $2,500 per violation per day. Attorney General James encourages New Yorkers to avoid products without ingredient lists, containing mercury or labeled only in non-English languages.
Consumers who have used these products are advised to consult health care providers for testing and seek immediate assistance from the New York Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 if experiencing symptoms of mercury poisoning.
