Oahu was rattled in October 2021 by a brazen string of robberies perpetrated by Micah Roman-Santos, 23, who now admits to holding up multiple banks and even violently targeting a Kapolei restaurant. Roman-Santos didn’t just want money; he used threats of gun violence to instill fear in tellers and a restaurant manager, leaving a trail of trauma across the island.
The first strike occurred October 1st at an Aiea bank, where Roman-Santos threatened a teller with shooting and made off with $348. The following day, he escalated his tactics at a Kapolei eatery, not only demanding cash but physically assaulting the manager when refused. He left empty-handed, but the message was clear: he was willing to use force. This wasn’t about desperation; it was calculated intimidation.
Roman-Santos continued his rampage on October 4th, hitting a Waianae bank. Displaying what appeared to be a firearm tucked into his waistband, he stole $900. Just days later, on October 7th, he targeted another Kapolei bank, this time netting $1,100 under the same threat of gun violence. Each incident ratcheted up the anxiety across Oahu, as residents and bank staff feared becoming his next target.
After a swift investigation by the FBI and Honolulu Police Department, Roman-Santos was apprehended. He’s now confessed to two counts of bank robbery, one count of armed bank robbery, and one count of attempted Hobbs Act robbery – a federal charge covering the restaurant assault. The feds aren’t treating this as a simple property crime; the violence involved significantly increases the stakes.
Federal prosecutors are seeking a substantial prison sentence. While sentencing guidelines will be considered, Roman-Santos faces potentially years behind bars for the armed bank robbery charge alone. U.S. Attorney Clare E. Connors made it clear that violent crime will not be tolerated, and the government will pursue maximum penalties for those who endanger the community. FBI Special Agent in Charge Steven Merrill echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to protecting Oahu residents.
Roman-Santos’ sentencing is scheduled for a date yet to be determined, and the courtroom will be a stark reminder of the fear he inflicted. This case serves as a chilling example of how quickly a local community can be terrorized by a single, violent actor. The feds will ensure he’s held accountable for the damage he caused, and the hope is that this sends a strong deterrent message to anyone considering a similar path.
