Ocala Felon David Shaw Faces Decade for Gun Possession

OCALA, FL – David Shaw, 36, of Ocala, is looking at a potential decade behind bars after admitting to illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition. Shaw, a repeat offender with a lengthy criminal record, pleaded guilty this week to the federal charges, stemming from a brazen attempt to evade law enforcement in December 2019.

The incident unfolded when a Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted a traffic stop after Shaw blew through a stop sign while riding a stolen motorcycle. Rather than comply, Shaw bolted, leading deputies on a chase that ended with a crash and a desperate foot pursuit. During the chase, the deputy witnessed Shaw ditch a loaded 9mm handgun and a backpack containing over 100 rounds of ammunition – evidence that sealed his fate.

This wasn’t a first-time offense for Shaw, far from it. Court records reveal a rap sheet riddled with felony convictions, including burglary of a dwelling, smuggling contraband into a correctional facility, trafficking in methamphetamine, and multiple counts of fleeing from police. As a convicted felon, Shaw is legally prohibited from owning or possessing any firearms or ammunition under federal law – a fact that clearly didn’t deter him.

Shaw was initially indicted on May 20, 2020, giving investigators time to build a solid case. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office partnered with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to ensure a thorough investigation, ultimately leading to Shaw’s guilty plea. A sentencing date has not yet been set, but with a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison, Shaw faces a significant stretch in confinement.

Assistant United States Attorney Tyrie Boyer is prosecuting the case, highlighting the Department of Justice’s commitment to cracking down on violent crime. This case is being prosecuted under the umbrella of “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a nationwide initiative designed to reduce violent crime through a comprehensive strategy encompassing prosecution, prevention, and re-entry programs.

U.S. Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez for the Middle District of Florida coordinates the PSN efforts, working alongside various federal, state, and local agencies. This case serves as a stark reminder that those who illegally possess firearms, especially convicted felons, will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing when it is announced.”
