An Ocala man has been sentenced to life in prison for raping a teenage girl. Michael James Smith, 35, was found guilty of Aggravated Sexual Battery and Sexual Battery by a Marion County jury in December 2023.
According to the sentencing order, Smith was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum mandatory sentence of 30 years. The sentence was handed down on February 22, 2024 by Judge Thomas A. Reese.
The victim, who was 14 years old at the time of the incident, reported the abuse to authorities in 2020. An investigation was launched, and Smith was subsequently arrested and charged with the crimes.
The case was prosecuted by the Marion County State Attorney’s Office, with assistance from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
