OCALA, FL – Federal agents have taken down a methamphetamine distribution network in Ocala, Florida, arresting three men and seizing over two kilograms of the deadly drug. Simon Rodriguez-Flores (48), Tirso Rodriguez-Astudillo (35), and Gilberto Astudillo-Carbajal (34), all of Ocala, are now facing serious federal charges that could put them away for life.
Acting United States Attorney W. Stephen Muldrow announced the federal criminal complaint this week, detailing a conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine. The investigation, spearheaded by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), revealed a calculated operation to flood the streets with crystal meth. If convicted, each man faces a 10-year mandatory minimum sentence, potentially escalating to life in federal prison. They also stare down the barrel of a hefty fine – up to $10 million – and a minimum of 5 years, potentially extending to a lifetime, of supervised release. Adding insult to injury, all three are citizens of Mexico and currently in the United States illegally, meaning deportation looms large if they somehow avoid the harshest penalties.
The DEA’s confidential source was key to cracking the case. In late May, Rodriguez-Flores brazenly sold approximately 140 grams of crystal methamphetamine to the source in a restaurant parking lot. Just days later, on June 2, Rodriguez-Flores and Rodriguez-Astudillo attempted to finalize a much larger deal – a full two kilograms of the drug – at a prearranged meeting in Ocala. But law enforcement was waiting, and the pair were arrested before the transaction could be completed. The two kilograms were immediately seized as evidence.
Simultaneously, a federal search warrant was executed at a residence in the northwest section of Ocala. There, agents took Astudillo-Carbajal into custody. The complaint alleges that Astudillo-Carbajal wasn’t just a distributor, but actively involved in the manufacture of crystal methamphetamine within the residence itself – a clear indication of a sophisticated and dangerous operation. The DEA believes this location served as a makeshift lab, fueling the network’s supply.
The bust was the result of a coordinated effort, drawing resources from multiple law enforcement agencies. Task force officers assigned to the DEA from the Gainesville Police Department, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, Ocala Police Department, Levy County Sheriff’s Office, Union County Sheriff’s Office, and Columbia County Sheriff’s Office all played a role. The Marion County Unified Drug Enforcement Strike Team provided critical assistance during the search warrant execution and arrests. This wasn’t a solo operation; it was a united front against a dangerous criminal enterprise.
Assistant United States Attorney Dale R. Campion is prosecuting the case. It’s crucial to remember that a criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Each defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. But the evidence gathered so far paints a grim picture, and these three men are likely facing a very long stretch in federal prison – and almost certain deportation – if convicted. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any developments.
