Ocean City Pizza Owners Sentenced For Tax Fraud

CAMDEN, N.J. — In a stunning blow to the Ocean City dining scene, Charles and Mary Bangle, owners of the iconic Manco & Manco Pizza chain, have been sentenced for tax evasion, cash structuring, and making false statements to IRS agents.

Charles Bangle, 57, from Somers Point, N.J., was handed a 15-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to evading taxes and structuring financial transactions to avoid reporting requirements. His wife, Mary Bangle, 56, also of Somers Point, received three years of probation and a $3,000 fine for making false statements to IRS special agents.

The couple, who acquired Manco & Manco Pizza in 2011, were charged with underreporting Charles’ income by over $263,113 on his 2010 tax return, resulting in a tax evasion charge. Mary Bangle admitted to retaining cash receipts for personal use and lying about the amount of cash deposited into her account, significantly exceeding her reported net pay.

Charles Bangle was also sentenced to three years of supervised release post-prison term, ordered to pay $248,560 in restitution, and fined an additional $5,000. He is expected to report to federal Bureau of Prisons by Sept. 10, 2017.

The investigation leading to the sentencing was conducted by IRS-Criminal Investigation, directed by Special Agent in Charge Jonathan D. Larsen. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason M. Richardson represented the government in this case.

Defendants were represented by defense counsel Laurence S. Shtasel Esq., from Philadelphia.
