WASHINGTON D.C. – Another foot soldier in the January 6th insurrection has fallen. Kyle Andrew Campbell, 31, of Columbus, Ohio, pleaded guilty to a felony charge of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers during the Capitol breach, the Department of Justice announced today. This wasn’t a peaceful protest; it was a mob intent on disrupting the certification of the 2020 presidential election, and Campbell played a direct role in the violence.
According to court documents, Campbell and an accomplice traveled to Washington, D.C. with the explicit intent of participating in the “Stop the Steal” rally. But the rally wasn’t enough. They quickly joined the surging crowd heading toward the Capitol building, breaching security perimeters with blatant disregard for the law. Campbell trampled over snow fencing erected by the U.S. Capitol Police (USCP), pushing his way towards the West Plaza.
The scene at the West Plaza was pure chaos. Campbell found himself face-to-face with a line of USCP officers desperately trying to hold back the tide of rioters. Witnesses and video evidence show Campbell was then pushed into an officer carrying a riot shield. Instead of retreating, Campbell forcibly rushed the officer, repeatedly striking both the officer and the shield before melting back into the crowd. This wasn’t accidental contact; it was a deliberate attack.
Campbell didn’t simply leave after the assault. He loitered on the West Plaza for at least another hour, then moved to the Upper West Terrace, remaining in a restricted area despite knowing he wasn’t authorized to be there. It took the FBI over three years – the agency made the arrest on December 11, 2023 – to finally bring him to justice. The slow wheels of justice are grinding, but they *are* grinding.
U.S. District Judge Randolph D. Moss will hand down Campbell’s sentence on October 25, 2024. He faces a significant prison term for his actions. This case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section, with assistance from the Southern District of Ohio. The FBI’s Cincinnati and Washington Field Offices led the investigation, with crucial support from the USCP and the Metropolitan Police Department.
In the 41 months since the January 6th attack, over 1,450 individuals have been charged with crimes related to the Capitol breach – including more than 500 charged with assaulting law enforcement. This case is a stark reminder that accountability is coming, though slowly. Anyone with information about the January 6th riot is urged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (800-225-5324) or submit tips online at tips.fbi.gov.
