WAYNESVILLE, OH – Dean Robert Harshman, 36, of Waynesville, Ohio, is facing serious federal charges stemming from the January 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol. Harshman was arrested and charged with obstruction of an official proceeding – a felony – alongside multiple misdemeanor counts related to unlawful entry and disruptive behavior within the Capitol building. The feds allege Harshman knowingly joined the mob that shut down the certification of the 2020 presidential election.
According to court documents, Harshman traveled to Washington D.C. specifically to attend the “Stop the Steal” rally, a gathering fueled by baseless claims of election fraud. He wasn’t there to sightsee. Investigators say Harshman actively participated in the breach, filming his own actions as the crowd overwhelmed security barriers near the Peace Circle and Pennsylvania Walkway. Footage reportedly shows him yelling slogans like, “This is the stuff they ain’t gonna show you on TV!” and “We’re taking our House back!” while surging towards the Capitol.
The felony charge of obstructing an official proceeding isn’t just about being present. Federal prosecutors will argue Harshman’s actions directly interfered with the lawful process of counting electoral votes – a crucial function of American democracy. The misdemeanor charges cover unlawful entry onto restricted grounds, disruptive conduct within the Capitol, and unauthorized protesting inside the building. Simply being *in* the building isn’t enough; the feds have to prove he acted with intent and disrupted the proceedings.
Inside the Capitol, Harshman allegedly didn’t just wander. He entered an office and continued filming, documenting the chaos and his own involvement. He then exited the building, leaving behind a trail of evidence that investigators have painstakingly pieced together. The FBI’s Cincinnati and Washington Field Offices, along with the U.S. Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police Department, all contributed to the investigation that led to his arrest. This wasn’t a spontaneous act; it was a coordinated effort to subvert the election results.
Harshman’s initial court appearance has already taken place. The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, with assistance from the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section. This highlights the seriousness with which the feds are treating the January 6th riot, viewing it not as mere protest, but as a potential act of domestic terrorism. He faces a potentially lengthy prison sentence if convicted on the felony charge.
This arrest is part of a massive, ongoing investigation. To date, over 1,069 individuals have been arrested across nearly all 50 states in connection with the Capitol breach. More than 350 of those arrested are accused of assaulting or impeding law enforcement officers. The feds aren’t slowing down. Anyone with information about the riot is urged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or submit tips online at tips.fbi.gov. Remember, Harshman, like all defendants, is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
