CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – In a stunning admission, Scott Allen Schafer, 54, of Millersburg, Ohio, has pled guilty to failing to update his sex offender registration, a violation that carries the possibility of up to 10 years in federal prison.
Court documents reveal that Schafer is a registered sex offender due to a prior conviction involving a minor from 2018 in Ohio. While residing in Ritchie County, West Virginia, he neglected to update his registration as required by law.
The gravity of the offense was underscored by the potential sentence, with U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors to be considered by the federal district court judge when determining Schafer’s fate.
The United States Marshals Service and the West Virginia State Police played pivotal roles in the investigation that led to Schafer’s arraignment. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Wagner is now tasked with representing the government in this case.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi presided over the hearing, ensuring a fair and thorough process for all parties involved.
This conviction serves as a stark reminder of the strict regulations imposed on sex offenders and the consequences they face when they fail to comply with the law.
