Omaha Bank Fraudster Ayer Jailed for 5 Years

OMAHA, NE – Jonathan Ayer, 25, faced federal justice after being sentenced to 60 months for a brazen bank fraud scheme that bilked over $200,000 from unsuspecting victims. The Omaha native, whose fraudulent activities were part of a larger criminal enterprise, was handed down the stiff sentence by Chief Judge Robert F. Rossiter, Jr., marking the conclusion of an investigation that stretched across state lines.

On January 31, 2023, a mail delivery man in Omaha was robbed at gunpoint while on his route. The thieves made off with an arrow key, which can unlock secure USPS collection boxes. In May of the same year, a victim discovered his bank account had been drained after someone cashed a fraudulent check for $15,171 made out to the IRS, thanks to Ayer’s altering skills.

US Postal Inspectors pored over surveillance video and linked Ayer to the crime through neighboring homes. The investigation also unveiled two addresses of interest in Omaha, where authorities found stolen mail and thousands of checks. One of the suspects was caught on camera cashing checks at ATMs and Walmart stores with a black sedan.

Ayer and his associate, Ronnie Colvin, III, were both apprehended during a simultaneous search and arrest warrant execution on December 7, 2023. Colvin faced additional charges for robbery and brandishing a firearm, while Ayer was solely charged with bank fraud. The scheme resulted in an intended loss of over $4.4 million.

Colvin was sentenced to 126 months for conspiracy to commit bank fraud and assaulting a USPS mail carrier. This case was a testament to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service’s dedication to justice, ensuring that Ayer’s fraudulent activities did not go unpunished.

As Ayer begins his five-year sentence, the community of Omaha can take solace in the fact that one of its most notorious fraudsters will be serving time for his crimes.
