YUMA, AZ – A 22-year-old Yuma man, Omar Molina-Galeana, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 52 months for orchestrating a gun trafficking scheme. U.S. District Judge David G. Campbell handed down the sentence last week, along with a three-year term of supervised release following his imprisonment.
The scheme, active between November 3, 2021, and April 14, 2022, saw Molina-Galeana illegally acquiring a substantial arsenal – 48 firearms – through the exploitation of nine individuals acting as “straw purchasers.” These individuals knowingly submitted false statements to Arizona gun stores, falsely claiming to be the actual buyers of the weapons when, in reality, they were fronting for Molina-Galeana.
Federal prosecutors revealed that Molina-Galeana systematically used these straw purchasers to circumvent background checks and federal gun laws. The details of how the firearms were intended to be used remain largely undisclosed, fueling speculation about their potential connection to other criminal activities in the region. The investigation, conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), has sent a clear message that such schemes will not be tolerated.
The case was presented as part of the Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies and local communities. Reinvigorated in 2017, PSN emphasizes targeted enforcement against violent criminals and localized strategies to improve public safety.
While authorities tout PSN’s success, critics point to the continuing flow of illegal firearms across state lines and the persistent challenges of addressing the root causes of gun violence. The sentencing of Molina-Galeana, however, represents a tangible victory for the ATF and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona, Phoenix, which led the prosecution.
Molina-Galeana pleaded guilty to Conspiracy on June 13, 2023. This conviction underscores the federal government’s commitment to cracking down on individuals who facilitate the illegal acquisition of firearms and contribute to the proliferation of gun violence. The ATF continues to investigate potential connections between Molina-Galeana and other individuals involved in the trafficking network.
