Omran Ismail Convicted in Chicago Gun Smuggling Scheme

Omran Ismail, 53, of Burbank, Illinois, was convicted Wednesday by a federal jury in Chicago on two counts tied to a scheme to straw purchase handguns and smuggle them into Egypt. The verdict lands after a three-day trial laying bare a brazen attempt to exploit U.S. gun laws and international travel routes for illegal arms trafficking.

Ismail was found guilty of conspiracy to knowingly make a materially false statement to a licensed firearms dealer and to smuggle firearms on a common carrier, as well as acquiring a firearm by means of a materially false statement. Evidence showed he purchased four 9mm handguns from a Tinley Park dealer on November 18, 2013, falsely claiming that co-defendant Ola Sayed, 47, of Palos Park, was his wife. He signed federal forms certifying himself as the actual buyer—knowing full well the guns would never be in his possession.

Five days after the purchase, Ismail picked up the weapons and immediately handed them over to Sayed. She later acquired two additional 9mm firearms, bringing the total to six. On December 23, 2013, authorities intercepted the arsenal in Sayed’s checked luggage at O’Hare International Airport as she prepared to board a flight to Cairo via London. The discovery triggered a federal investigation that unraveled the smuggling pipeline.

Sayed, charged in the same conspiracy, fled prosecution and remains a fugitive. Warrants are active, and federal authorities warn she could face trial in absentia. The case underscores persistent vulnerabilities exploited by those seeking to traffic American-made firearms overseas through deception and exploitation of domestic gun purchasing systems.

The conspiracy charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison; the straw purchasing count allows for up to ten. U.S. District Judge Sara L. Ellis scheduled sentencing for December 3, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. Ismail remains free on bond pending sentencing, a decision that drew quiet murmurs from courtroom observers familiar with the gravity of firearm trafficking charges.

‘Straw purchasers enable unlawful possession of guns and the violence that may follow,’ said U.S. Attorney John R. Lausch, Jr. ‘We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to hold accountable those who engage in these illicit transactions.’ James M. Gibbons, Special Agent-in-Charge of HSI Chicago, added, ‘Individuals who circumvent our nation’s gun laws to illegally obtain firearms for others stand as a threat to our public safety and national security.’ The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Abigail L. Peluso and Katie M. Durick, with critical support from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
