Burglar Strikes Eagle Butte Cultural Center, Steals $37,420
In a brazen break-in, 31-year-old Brian One Feather and his accomplice targeted the Howard V. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, making off with $37,420 worth of personal property in June 2012.
One Feather, 31, of Eagle Butte, appeared before U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on September 12, 2013, and pleaded guilty to third-degree burglary.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is 5 years in custody, a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and a $100 assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The investigation was conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Law Enforcement Division, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson handling the case.
A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for November 26, 2013. One Feather was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending sentencing.
As the community comes to terms with the brazen burglary, questions remain about the motivations behind the crime and the impact on the victims.
One Feather’s guilty plea brings some closure, but the full extent of the damage will only be revealed at sentencing.
