Orange County, NY, resident Daniel DeGroat, 30, has been slammed with a two-count indictment for mailing threatening communications to a state official and a federal judge. The charges carry a daunting penalty of up to 10 years in the slammer and a $250,000 fine.
The grim allegations surface from Assistant U.S. Attorney Franz M. Wright, who is on the case. According to the indictment, DeGroat, of Middletown, NY, sent out the chilling missives back in November 2020. His targets included the Acting Commissioner of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision and a federal judge.
This sinister move led to an investigation helmed by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, under the watchful eye of Acting Commissioner Anthony J. Annucci; the Federal Bureau of Investigation, directed by Special Agent-in-Charge Stephen Belongia; and the U.S. Marshals Service, led by Marshal Charles Salina.
Despite his charges, DeGroat is currently maintaining his innocence, with the prosecution reminding readers that an indictment merely signifies an accusation, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
