A Bridgeport man with a history of violence has been sentenced to six years in federal prison for possessing a gun. Oretxis Ramos, 34, of Bridgeport, was convicted of murder in 2005 and sentenced to 25 years of imprisonment. He was on state parole at the time of his arrest in September 16, 2022 when Bridgeport Police encountered him as a passenger in an unregistered car.
According to court documents and statements made in court, Ramos attempted to flee when officers ordered him to exit the vehicle. He was apprehended a short distance away, and a search of his person revealed a Taurus G2C 9mm semiautomatic handgun with a high-capacity magazine that was loaded with 9mm ammunition.
In November 1, 2023, Ramos pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. It is a violation of federal law for a person previously convicted of a felony offense to possess a firearm or ammunition that has moved in interstate or foreign commerce.
Ramos has been detained since his arrest. He was sentenced to 72 months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, by U.S. District Judge Omar A. Williams in Hartford.
This matter was investigated by the FBI’s Bridgeport Safe Streets Task Force and the Bridgeport Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ross Weingarten and Karen L. Peck through Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), the centerpiece of the Department of Justice’s violent crime reduction efforts.
PSN is an evidence-based program proven to be effective at reducing violent crime. Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them.
