Orlando, Florida – In a chilling turn of cybercrime, United States Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe has announced the unsealing of an indictment against Salvatore Russotto (58, Orlando) for making online threats to injure and kill Alina Habba, the U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey.
Russotto stands accused of a series of postings on his own online account that include calls for violence against Habba. His chilling messages read: “A slow painful death for HABBA,” “Eliminate HABBA. 86 Traitor. Death penalty for all traitors,” and “I HOPE YOU DIE A PAINFUL DEATH.” These statements have been deemed true threats of violence.
According to the indictment, Russotto’s heinous campaign took place on May 19, 2025. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison for both counts of threatening to injure and kill Habba, as well as retaliating against a federal law enforcement officer by threat.
Every defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty, an important reminder that comes with this severe charge. The case has been investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation – Newark, Jersey and Tampa, Florida Field Offices – and the United States Marshals Service. Assistant United States Attorney Kara Wick will lead the prosecution.
The charges against Russotto underscore the serious nature of online threats targeting public officials and the robust measures that law enforcement takes to ensure justice is served.
