Illegal immigrant sentenced in federal court for reentering the country after deportation.
Oscar Armand Mejia, a 42-year-old Salvadoran national, pleaded guilty to violating federal immigration laws after being deported from the United States.
Mejia, a resident of Lynn, Massachusetts, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Indira Talwani to ‘time-served,’ approximately 6 weeks’ imprisonment, for illegally reentering the country after being deported.
According to court records, Mejia was arrested in 2008 by the Brockton Police and charged with assault and battery and drunk driving. He was later convicted and ordered to serve a sentence of 90 days.
After completing his sentence on November 4, 2008, Mejia was placed into removal proceedings and deported to El Salvador. However, he later illegally reentered the United States and was subsequently arrested by the Stoughton Police for drunk driving.
Mejia appeared in state court, posted bail, and was released. However, ICE was not contacted at that time. Mejia later defaulted in state court by failing to appear and a warrant was issued for his arrest. On February 24, 2020, ICE located and arrested Mejia.
United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling and Marcos D. Charles, Acting Field Office Director, Enforcement and Removal Operations, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Boston, made the announcement today. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth G. Shine of Lelling’s Major Crimes Unit prosecuted the case.
