BOSTON – In a gritty turn of events, Oscar Lopez, 41, also known as ‘Luis Maldonado,’ has been sentenced for the heinous crime of illegal reentry into the United States after deportation. The Honduran national was slammed with a sentence that includes time served—approximately 2.5 months—and a year of supervised release following his release. Lopez faces imminent deportation once his sentence is completed.
The saga of Lopez began in 2003 when he entered the U.S. illegally. Following an immigration court order for removal, Lopez skipped out on his date with destiny and vanished for nearly a decade before reappearing in 2012. He was sent packing again in January 2013 but managed to sneak back into the country in May of that year.
State authorities finally caught up with Lopez in 2024, where he was nabbed for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and presenting false identification to law enforcement. Immigration officials picked him up in April 2025, leading to his guilty plea to one count of unlawful reentry in May 2025.
United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations, made the grim announcement today. Assistant U.S. Attorney John J. Reynolds prosecuted this high-profile case with unwavering determination.
Lopez’s illegal activities have once again highlighted the persistent challenges faced by immigration authorities in enforcing the nation’s laws. As the federal government continues its efforts to combat illegal reentry and other immigration violations, cases like Lopez’s serve as stark reminders of the stakes involved.
