LA QUINTA, CA – A brazen attack on a local Republican club has landed a Palm Desert man in federal custody. Carlos Espriu, 23, is accused of firebombing the East Valley Republican Women Federated (EVRWF) office in La Quinta on May 31st, a crime that could send him away for decades.
According to a federal criminal complaint unsealed today, Espriu allegedly smashed windows at the EVRWF headquarters just after 1:15 a.m. before hurling three gasoline-filled bottles – Molotov cocktails – inside. Surveillance footage reportedly shows him returning to the scene, retrieving the unignited devices, and then throwing them into the building a second time, immediately igniting a fire. The damage was limited, but the intent was clear.
The EVRWF offered a reward for information leading to an arrest, and the public responded. Investigators say tips from concerned citizens, combined with surveillance footage from the club and a nearby business, quickly zeroed in on Espriu. The complaint details a disturbing digital footprint, including a Twitter account allegedly belonging to Espriu that posted, just three days before the attack, “I wanna go burn shit n get hit with tear gas.”
A search of Espriu’s residence in July allegedly turned up a green lighter similar to the one used to ignite the devices. More damning, investigators recovered audio recordings from a dashboard camera. In these recordings, Espriu allegedly admits to shaving his beard after seeing surveillance footage broadcast on local news. He also reportedly details the construction of the Molotov cocktails – filling bottles with gasoline and inserting a towel wick – and recounts the firebombing, mirroring the events captured on video.
Espriu, currently in state custody, is expected to be transferred to federal custody and appear in United States District Court on Friday afternoon. He is charged with one count of attempted arson. If convicted, Espriu faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in federal prison, with a statutory maximum of 20 years behind bars. This isn’t just vandalism; it’s a calculated attack on a political organization.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI’s Inland Empire Joint Terrorism Task Force. While the motive remains unclear, the case highlights the rising threat of politically motivated violence. Remember, a criminal complaint contains allegations, and Carlos Espriu is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. But the evidence, as presented by federal authorities, paints a grim picture of premeditation and malice.”
