In the sweltering heat of August 1906, a full-blown uprising shook the western reaches of Cuba. A ragtag band of insurgents, estimated to be around 7,000 strong, took up arms against the government in the province of Pinar del Río. The rebels, fueled by a deep-seated desire for change, were determined to bring down the established order.
