In a stunning reversal, the French court of cassation has overturned the convictions of six high-profile defendants in the Panama Canal scandal, setting free the son of one of the architects behind the doomed project. Charles de Lesseps, the 55-year-old son of Ferdinand de Lesseps, had been serving time for his alleged role in the massive swindle, alongside five other defendants: Charles Marlus Fontaine, Henri Cottu, Gustave Eiffel, and two others.
